What Is a Planting Plan?

A planting plan is a detailed, tailored guide to what to plant, where to plant it, and how to help it thrive.

It takes into account:

  • Your soil and site conditions
  • Light, shade and aspect
  • The size and shape of your garden
  • How much time you want to spend maintaining it
  • Your personal style and preferences
  • Wildlife and biodiversity value
  • Seasonal interest throughout the year

The result is a planting scheme that feels natural, cohesive and easy to live with — not over-designed or high maintenance.

My Approach to Planting Design

My work is rooted in sustainable, ecological gardening.

I believe good planting should:

  • Work with nature, not against it
  • Be suited to local conditions
  • Support pollinators and wildlife
  • Be manageable over the long term
  • Feel relaxed and timeless, not trend-led

I specialise in:

  • Naturalistic planting
  • Peat-free, sustainable choices
  • Pollinator-friendly gardens
  • Perennial-led designs
  • Edible and ornamental planting
  • Gardens that evolve beautifully over time

What’s Included in a Planting Plan

Every planting plan is created individually and includes:

Initial Consultation

A discussion to understand:

  • Your garden and its conditions
  • What you love (and don’t love)
  • How you use your space
  • Your level of experience
  • Your maintenance preferences

This can be done in person or online.

Site Assessment

I assess:

  • Soil type and structure
  • Light levels and aspect
  • Drainage
  • Existing plants
  • Microclimates within your garden

This ensures the planting is genuinely suited to your space.

Planting Design & Layout

You’ll receive a clear, easy-to-follow planting plan showing:

  • Plant placement
  • Spacing
  • Grouping for natural flow
  • Seasonal interest
  • Structure and layering

The design is always practical and achievable — not overly complex.

Plant List & Guidance

You’ll also receive:

  • A full plant list
  • Alternatives where appropriate
  • Notes on care and spacing
  • Guidance on planting and aftercare

I prioritise:

  • UK-grown plants
  • Peat-free cultivation
  • Wildlife-friendly varieties
  • Plants suited to long-term success

Ongoing Support (Optional)

Many clients choose follow-up support, which can include:

  • Seasonal check-ins
  • Planting advice
  • Adjustments as the garden evolves
  • Advice on maintenance and care

Who Planting Plans Are For

Planting plans are ideal if you:

  • Want a beautiful but manageable garden
  • Are unsure what to plant and where
  • Have a new or recently redesigned space
  • Want to improve biodiversity
  • Are moving away from high-maintenance gardening
  • Want a more natural, relaxed planting style
  • Prefer guidance rather than full garden design

They work equally well for:

  • Small gardens
  • Larger rural gardens
  • Courtyards
  • Raised beds
  • Cottage gardens
  • Wildlife-friendly spaces

Sustainable & Peat-Free Gardening

All my planting plans are rooted in sustainable practice.

That means:

  • No peat-based composts
  • Plants chosen for resilience, not trend
  • Encouraging soil health
  • Supporting pollinators and wildlife
  • Reducing long-term maintenance
  • Avoiding unnecessary chemicals

This approach creates gardens that are not only beautiful, but better for the environment.

A Note from Lucy

I believe planting should feel intuitive, not intimidating.

A good planting plan gives you clarity and confidence — it removes the guesswork and allows you to enjoy your garden as it grows and changes.

My aim is always to create something that feels natural, timeless and deeply connected to its setting.
